9th Spring Film Festival: Gala Night (Part One)

Friday the 13th never looked so upbeat. That night, the Ateneo de Manila University's premier Filipino-Chinese organization, Celadon, held its 9th Spring Film Festival at the Grand Atrium of Edsa Shangri-la Mall. Celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Ram, the festival is a ten-day event and will showcase six award-winning Chinese films, ranging from thrilling action to contemporary drama; from comedy to romance, with English subtitles, for FREE, at the mall's cineplex from February 13 to 22, 2015.

Included in the list of movies is The Grandmaster, Sunlight at Fingertips, Beijing Blues, Love Deposit, Legend of the Kung Fu Rabbit, and Caught in the Web - there is definitely something to fit your fancy!

The gala kicked off with the arrival of this cute, furry guy accompanied by the loud banging of drums in the background, greeting the surprised guests before going up the stage.

The gala night also held performances of traditional Chinese music and a Chinese painting exhibit featuring the beautiful works of Confucius Institute students. The photo above shows the artist behind the artwork (or in this case, in front of it).

I was going about my core team duties when I saw the guy with the jacket, smiled at him, before I realized that he was my History professor. Haha. I must not be used to seeing my teachers outside school, which was okay because he laughed at my reaction. Anyway, he said his wife was there with him, so I waited for her to take this photo of them together. She came in with a plate of food, and my professor introduced me to her. At first, I didn't recognize her (too), but when the event was about to end, someone pointed it out. Turns out his wife is Heidi Mendoza from the Commission on Audit. Wow. It was an honor to meet her.

Other attendees included the Leong Hall and Confucius Institute benefactors, Dr. Ricardo and Dr. Rosita Leong, Mr. Don Reich S. De Dios from the Art Association of the Philippines, Mr. Oh Choong-Suk, from the Korean Culture Center, Dr. Alfredo E. Pascual, President of the University of the Philippines - Diliman, and representatives from the Embassy of Greece, Brazil, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Austria, among others.

And the lions lead the way to the film screening of the Grandmaster in the Mall's Cinema.
